The function of the digestive system is to digest food and absorb the nutrients found within. Enzymes must first break down ingested food into its constituent molecules so that these molecules can be absorbed in the small intestine. Efficient breakdown of food is essential to release vital nutrients, which must then be absorbed through the intestinal wall through complex biochemical processes. Bromelain is an enzyme derived from the stem of fresh pineapple. It is probably best known for its use as a digestive aid, particularly for facilitating the digestion of foods high in protein and fat. This product provides 1,250 GDUs (gelatin dissolving units) per tablet. This is a measure of its naturally occurring activity level and is actually more important than the weight of bromelain. Some brands imported from the United States exaggerate the GDU level per tablet on the front of the label (a description of 3,000 GDUs would actually be 1,000 GDUs).
